Clara Buttemer, R.Ac

Having graduated as the class valedictorian from Pacific Rim College in 2021, Clara is delighted to be offering Acupuncture from her home clinic in Saanich, as well as at Tula Massage & Yoga in Broadmead village.

Clara has a special interest in (and experience) working with mental health, digestive concerns, pain conditions, and women’s health, although her practice is not limited to these areas.

She would be honoured to support you through whatever health challenges you may be facing.

An ancient practice that originally emerged from the traditional indigenous healers of China, Acupuncture has gained a scientifically effective reputation for treating a wide range of health concerns. A branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the therapy is done with tiny needles (0.18-0.25 mm thick) that are inserted into specific points along channel or “meridian” systems. These channels relate to our internal organ function and nervous system regulation. People who have not achieved full success through Western Medicine, specifically in relation to misunderstood and chronic illnesses, often find Acupuncture to be the “missing link” in their recovery. If you are afraid of needles, or just simply prefer physical touch, look below to find information on how we can apply the knowledge of Chinese Medicine into a needle-free bodywork treatment that will still help you reach your health goals, and will still be covered by your health insurance.

As well as helping to restore compromised health, Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine also excel as preventative medicines, and can be seen as an essential aspect of maintaining health and vitality into old age. So whether you have complex symptoms related to sleep, digestion, menstruation, chronic pain, fertility, mental health, and stress, or whether you are simply interested in maintaining and optimizing your vitality, Acupuncture may be for you. This therapy can help you rest deeply, restore your nervous system, and provide the space and conditions your body needs to orient towards vitality. The treatment is not painful, and in fact is usually quite relaxing. People often fall asleep and we call that an “Acu-nap”. As well as the needles, in a treatment we may also use moxibustion (the burning of a herb close to the skin which radiates infrared heat to the area), cupping (suctioning of the skin, muscles, and fascia – kind of like a reverse massage), gua sha (gentle scraping of the skin with a Jade tool), and Tui Na (Chinese Massage). Learn more about cupping below!

Available in 45, 60, and 75 minute sessions. For the initial session, 75 minutes is required in order to take a comprehensive health history.

Acupuncture is a registered modality in BC and is covered under many extended health benefits packages.

Note: WCZT does not offer direct billing. You will be issued an official e-receipt which can be uploaded to your health insurance portal for reimbursement.

Clara also offers acupuncture from Tula Massage & Yoga in Broadmead Village — which does offer direct billing in a clinic environment. Click here to book Clara at Tula.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, without the needles:

Like the idea of Chinese Medicine but sensitive to or afraid of needles? Utilizing the diagnostic model of TCM and borrowing some techniques from Zenthai Shiatsu, this therapy focuses on meridian stretches and acupressure, as well gestures and qualities of touch that harmonize the 5 Elements. Traditional Tui Na, cupping and moxibustion, may also be included. These sessions are covered through some extended health benefits under Acupuncture.

60, 75, and 90 minute treatments available

This is an ancient technique stemming from Chinese Medicine in which glass cups are placed on the body using suction generated from fire. The cups pull toxins out of the tissue, generously move stagnant energies, and release muscle tissue. It is kind of like a reverse massage and has amazing effects for muscle recovery, pain, inflammation, blood flow to old injuries, and simply for the satisfying sensation of a deep tissue massage.

Upon request or sometimes by recommendation, we can include cupping in your Acupuncture, Needle-Free Acupuncture, or Zenthai Shiatsu treatment.
