It’s kind of like trying to explain “what is yoga?” or “what is dance?”…It’s complicated! Or maybe not.
Qi Gong translates very roughly to “energy practices”. Many lineages originate from ancient martial arts lineages (such as Taichi and Kung Fu), as practices developed for students to gain competency in the fundamentals of alignment and movement. Some Qi Gong practices are truly ancient, dating back to pre-agrarian shamanic practices in which one’s connection (and good graces) to the natural forces was a life-or-death matter. Some are much newer, from the early to mid 20th century, developed from students of old masters who “grew up” and found unique twists on the classics.
Clara is mainly teaching (and continually learning) Soma Dao Qi Gong – a multi-lineage style developed by Dr. Michael Smith, lifelong martial arts devotee and co-founder of the Kootenai-Columbia College of Integrative Health Sciences. Click here to explore the Soma Dao website.
The style is broad and wide-ranging in approach and technique, yet it is all one connected practice. Students may be introduced to standing and seated meditation, gentle stretch-like movement, vigorous tendon strengthening exercises, and precise breathwork.
With Qi Gong – as with all things – the benefits are coupled with the investment. In other words, “You get out what you put in”. Beginner students often report noticeable positive changes occurring in the first few months of practice – often mood, energy levels, focus and perception. As the months go on, benefits sink deeper into the muscles, tendons, and bones. Eventually the fascial system of the body begins to unwind old adhesions and avoidance patterns. New dimensions of freedom are continuously unveiled. It is a powerful practice.
Qi Gong is a key component of most Zenthai workshops, retreats, and intensives – another great bonus of participating in the programs and workshops!
